Amendment 4 (2026) to BS 7671:2018 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations) primarily updates the regulations to reflect emerging technologies and the transition to a low-carbon electrical infrastructure. The most significant addition is a new chapter covering Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), providing comprehensive requirements for their safe selection, installation, protection and inspection.
The amendment also introduces new requirements for Power over Ethernet (PoE) installations and functional earthing for ICT equipment, recognising the increasing use of network-powered devices and digital building systems. In addition, the energy efficiency guidance has been expanded and promoted to a new chapter, placing greater emphasis on designing energy-efficient electrical installations.
Further updates include revisions to requirements for medical locations, EV charging installations, and various technical clarifications and corrections throughout the regulations. While Amendment 4 introduces relatively few changes to traditional domestic and commercial wiring practices, it is an important update for electricians working with renewable energy, battery storage, EV charging and smart building technologies.
