The Right to Repair Law
From the 1st July 2021, new legislation was introduced giving consumers and third party companies easier access to repair their products and gain technical information. The primary aim of the legislation being to extend the life cycle of a range of devices and appliances by up to 10 years.
Manufacturers will now have to make spare parts available for washing machines, washer-dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators and TVs for the first time. Repairs also need to be possible using everyday tools. At present, cookers, hobs, tumble dryers, microwaves or tech eg laptops and smartphones are not covered.
According to the UK government, this will reduce the 1.5 million tonnes of electrical waste generated each year.
Faults are more common than you might think, too. Half of us have had one in the past three years, according to a survey of 1,043 ‘Which?’ members in November 2020.
Spare parts will have to be available within 2 years of an appliance going on sale, and up until either 7 or 10 years after the product has been discontinued, depending on the part. Some parts will only be available to professional repairers, while others will be available to everyone, so you can fix it yourself.
These measures will not only contribute to reducing waste and carbon emissions but also provide more freedom when faults inevitably happen, saving money and hassle on your own appliances, or providing an additional income for repairing/servicing others.
Approximately 70% of call outs for home domestic appliance repairs are for washing machines.
This course will give you the skills and experience to repair your own washing machines, and/or offer a washing machine repair/service as part of your work.
