Overview

The Builder Training Centre (The BTC) offers high quality structured Carpentry Courses, which can be attended as a 5 day course during the week (Monday to Friday) or, for those that have commitments during the week, a weekend course (2 consecutive weekends).

Our instructors are qualified, highly experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic Tradespersons, so students can take advantage of all the tips of the trade, personal experiences and advice they offer.

This short course is intensive, but the atmosphere is relaxed and enjoyable which creates a good learning environment. If you have a particular project in mind, or some building plans you wish to gain advice on, our instructors will be more than happy to discuss these with you.

This practical Carpentry Course is set out to enable you to learn the skills of carpentry and joinery. The course will give you as many carpentry and joinery skills as possible.

You will learn how to construct a variety of commonly used joints such as a mortice and tennon joint, corner leg joints, etc. You will be tasked with projects to complete to enable you to put your new found skills into practice.

This course focuses on the mastery of hand tools, such as chisels and planes, where practical skill is emphasised rather than theory.

On completion of the Carpentry Course, most students progress onto the Advanced Carpentry Course, for further training with power tools and a larger range of materials.

FAQS

Steel toe-capped safety footwear is a health and safety requirement for all our courses. We stock steel-toe capped boots from size 3 to 13 (with some half sizes), which can be purchased on the first morning of your course for just £20.00. You should wear suitable comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting dirty.

We provide all relevant tools and materials that are required for the duration of your course.

Changing facilities for men and women are available on-site. For a £5.00 deposit you can get a padlock to a locker for any small valuables you may wish to bring along.

You are welcome to bring your own food to eat in our canteen. Alternatively, we sell a small selection of hot and cold drinks and snacks, or you could purchase food from one of the local supermarkets/shops/cafes/restaurants within just a few minutes’ walk.

Provided you are aged at least 18 years and deemed fit and healthy to complete physical work, this course is suitable for you. Whether your background is already in a trade or something completely different, these skills can be learnt and applied directly after the course.

Over the years, we have had students attend the course for many reasons, the most popular of which would be to expand their current professional services, start a whole new career or to just pick up a new skill for DIY. These are not just skills for one project, these are skills for life!

Many of our courses are run over 5 days (Monday to Friday) with hours of 9am until approximately 4pm, alternatively the same course can be attended over 2 consecutive weekends with longer hours of 8.30am until approximately 5pm.

The content of the course is the same and, once break times have been accounted for, the hours are also the same. It is also the case that it is usually the same tutor! Rest assured you will not miss anything by attending the course over 4 days rather than 5.

You will be awarded a Builder Training Centres Limited Certificate of Continuous Professional Development after full completion of the course. The Certificate will include your name, the dates you attended, and on the reverse we list all the areas you have covered throughout your course.

Course notes will be provided during your course. These will summarise most of the topics covered with some diagrams and pictures also included, however, you may choose to bring along a notepad and pen to take additional notes.

As we are located within Waddon Train Station Buildings, we do not have any parking on-site. That said, there are plenty of residential roads in the surrounding area that have free unrestricted parking, within just a few minutes’ walk. If attending on Sunday, you can park in the marked red boxes in Epsom Road where our Centre at Waddon Station is situated and in Stafford Road where our Electrical Centre is situated (a minute’s walk away) all day free of charge.

Please email info@thebtc.co.uk if you would like any further information or instructions.

Peter was an excellent teacher and even though I was the only female in the group I never once felt disadvantaged or treated differently. Everyone was so friendly and helpful."
